Why Herbal Medicines?

Herbal medicines have demonstrated effectiveness in their ability to improve blood perfusion to the brain and learning capacity. The use of herbal medicine in the treatment of ADHD is of high interest to the many families and professionals looking for alternatives to drug therapy.

A Worrying Trend

According to the The Drug Enforcement Administrations own records, the production of methylphenidate by the drug manufacturers in the United States has increased by more than 500 percent since 1991.

The production of amphetamine has increased by over 2,000 percent in the same nine-year period of time. More than 50 percent of the methylphenidate and amphetamine prescriptions are written by pediatritions.

Their data indicate that the number precriptions written for ADHD has increased by a factor of 5 since 1991. In 1998 alone, over 4,000 prescriptions for methylphenidate were written for children 2 years of age or less. (It should be noted that this drug is not approved for use in children under six years of age because safety and efficacy has not been established.)

These are very concerning trends

Epidemological studies indicate that the increased prevalence of modern diseases, ASD and ADHD is associated with a western style diet (such as nutrient-poor processed foods, food additives, colourings and preservatives) and environmental factors such as lifestyle and pollution.

We need to get back to LHI foods. That is low human intervention.
Take a good hard look at what we are eating and understand what are the hidden dangers in the foods we consume.

Sally Falon makes this point very clear in her book Nourishing Traditions

I refer to this book frequently which is packed full of wonderful information about the food we eat and how we should prepare and eat it.

She followed the work of a dentist who was interested in the diets of many third world countries where they showed few signs of tooth decay. He wanted to know why they had such strong teeth while kids in western society were getting braces on their teeth at a young age and having multiple fillings .

He found that these people were not eating highly processed foods and as a result had stronger healthier teeth than the more affluent counterparts in our society.

I know we have Nevan friends from Vanuatu who have the most amazingly beautiful teeth and they eat a diet rich in locally grown and prepared foods.

The Okinawan people of Japan were another example of how a LHI diet afforded them longer and healthier lives.

Some Good Reasons why You Should Avoid Processed Foods

  • CANCER – Some synthetic chemicals used in the processed foods industry are known to have carcinogenic properties.
  • OBESITY – Heavily processed foods are usually higher in sugar, fat and salt, and lower in nutrients and fiber than the raw foods used to create them,.
  • According to the World Health Organization, processed foods are to blame for the spike in obesity levels and chronic disease around the world.
  • HEART DISEASE – Many processed foods have trans fatty acids (TFA), the dangerous type of fat you don’t want in your diet. TFA’s give a rise to LDL, the dangerous cholesterol, and squash HDL, the good one.
  • A recent study bu Harvard found that women who avoided high-carb processed foods cut their heart disease risk by 30%.

Folks we need to get back to basics in our approach to food and medicine. Take a good look at what God has provided us with first before going off the the chemist or the supermarket, we should go to the garden.

Home grown vegetables and herbs always taste so much better.

I am so glad I came across this article! I can tell you put a lot of effort into this article because there are so much content and detail. I am a young person and I like lifting; I have seen what our schools have been feeding my peers, and all of it is processed and sugary junk food. The book, Herbal Healing for Children, I wish my parents bought me this book, so I am going to get this so my family will have good health. Thank you so much, Fresia, and I will come back for more information!

Thank you for your comments Marques. I am impressed that someone so young is working online. It was my son who made me think a lot about herbs and healing and organic foods.I am 70 years old and I have learned  a lot from him and the research I have done myself. I just wish I had been so aware when I was much younger. . The internet has made it possible for us all to learn new things even as an older person.

       All the best to you.
